First ride in Bali traffic
Published 13 Sept 2026
Your first time riding a motorcycle in Bali is not really about the bike. It is about the fifteen minutes after you turn out of the gate: traffic on the left, a horn behind you that does not mean what it means at home, a dog asleep in the middle of a lane, and a scooter with two surfboards overtaking on the inside.
Treasure Bike Rental is a motorcycle shop on Jalan Raya Padonan in Tibubeneng, Canggu. We hand bikes to nervous first-timers every week, and to riders with twenty years of experience who still get caught by a sand patch on Batu Bolong. This page is the honest version of that briefing. It is not legal advice, and it does not replace the rental terms.
If you have never ridden, do not start on Batu Bolong
There is a difference between first time riding in Bali and first time riding, ever. If you have never operated a clutch, never used a front brake in anger, never done a slow-speed U-turn — Canggu is a terrible classroom. Batu Bolong in particular is the worst road on the island to learn on: it is narrow, it is full of pedestrians in swimwear, there is sand across the tarmac from the beach end, and every fifty metres someone is reversing a car out of a warung.
The internet will tell you that everyone in Bali rides and it is fine. What that sentence hides is that locals learned as children on village roads. We rent motorcycles, we do not study road safety, so take the rest as what we hear from the counter rather than as statistics: the tourist crashes that reach us are almost always a first ride on a holiday rental, a missing helmet, or a drink — often more than one of the three.
So, plainly:
- Never ridden anything? Take lessons at home, get a motorcycle license, then come and enjoy the island. We are not the right first bike.
- Ridden a bit, years ago? You will be fine, but budget a slow first day and expect the clutch to feel unfamiliar for an hour.
- Ride regularly at home? The machine is not your problem. The traffic culture is, and that is what the rest of this page covers.
We do not run a riding school and we will refuse a rental when it is obvious the rider cannot operate the bike safely out of the gate. That conversation is uncomfortable for ten seconds and much better than the alternative. Rider requirements are spelled out in the terms.
Left-side riding, honestly
Indonesia rides on the left, like Australia, the UK, Japan and Thailand. If that is already your side of the road, ignore this section. If you come from Europe or the Americas, left side riding in Bali takes about two or three days to stop being conscious effort.
The mistakes are predictable, which means you can pre-empt them:
- Right turns are the wide ones now. Left turns are the tight ones. Your muscle memory has this backwards.
- Roundabouts go clockwise. Give way to traffic from your right.
- You will drift right after a stop. Especially pulling out of a quiet side road with nobody around to correct you. The dangerous moment is not the busy junction — it is the empty one.
- Mirrors and head checks feel wrong. Overtaking happens on your right here, and also on your left, and also sometimes on the pavement.
Say the words “stay left” out loud for the first day. It sounds ridiculous. It works.
Honks, dogs, sand, rain
Here are the Bali traffic motorcycle tips that actually change your first week, in rough order of how often they matter.
The horn is a sonar, not an insult. A short beep from behind means “I am here, probably overtaking, do not swerve.” It is information. Do not take it personally, do not brake hard in response, and use it yourself: a light tap before a blind bend or when passing a parked car is normal and polite.
Nobody looks before pulling out. Villa gates, warung driveways, side lanes. Assume every vehicle at the edge of the road is about to move into it. Cover your brakes and ride further from the kerb than instinct suggests.
Dogs and chickens do not have a plan. Bali street dogs sleep on warm tarmac and cross without checking. Slow down; do not swerve. Swerving at speed on a sandy road is worse than the dog.
Sand and gravel are the real hazard. Every road that touches a beach carries sand across the corners, and construction trucks leave gravel on the villa lanes. Sand under a front tyre mid-corner is the most common way tourists lose a bike here. The fix is boring: less lean, less speed, look ahead for the colour change on the tarmac.
Rain changes everything for ten minutes. When a Bali downpour starts, painted road markings, tiled shopfront aprons, metal drain covers and the painted speed bumps become genuinely slippery. Storms are heavy and short — pull under a roof, buy a coffee, wait it out. Riding in the first minutes of rain, with oil lifting off the road and your visor fogged, is the worst possible combination.
Potholes hide in shade and puddles. After dark, on unlit lanes, a puddle can be 20 cm deep. Ride the line the scooters ahead of you are riding.
Fuel up before you are empty. Fill at a petrol station; bottle fuel is not permitted on our bikes — the petrol in Canggu guide covers the grade, what to say at the pump, and what to do if you are low and far from a station. Running dry on Jalan Raya Canggu at 6 pm is a bad first-week memory.
Helmets are required for rider and passenger, every trip, including the two-minute run to the shop. They come with the bike.
Quiet roads near Padonan vs the strip
The good news about starting from Tibubeneng is that you do not have to touch the busy roads to get comfortable. The shop sits on Jalan Raya Padonan, and the network of lanes north and east of it — rice fields, low walls, almost no cars — is the best practice ground in Canggu.
A sensible first hour:
- Leave the shop and head away from the beach, inland on Padonan.
- Find a straight, empty stretch. Practise pulling away, stopping smoothly, and a couple of slow U-turns until the clutch is muscle memory again.
- Do a loop through the Pererenan rice-field lanes — narrow but slow, and drivers there expect bikes.
- Only then, if you need to, join Jalan Raya Canggu.
The roads to avoid on day one, all of them for the same reason (tourists, parking chaos, sand):
- Batu Bolong — the café strip. Peak chaos from about 16:00.
- Jalan Pantai Berawa — busy, and the Berawa beach end fills with cars and valets.
- Nelayan and Echo Beach car parks — loose surfaces and no lane logic.
- The Seminyak run at sunset — long, hot, stop-start, and not a beginner’s reward.
Ride at 10:00, not 17:00, for the first few days. Same roads, half the traffic and no low sun in your visor. If you are riding home after dark, add a big margin: unlit bikes with no rear light are common.
Villa delivery is free in the Canggu zone — Berawa, Pererenan and Tibubeneng — but if you are anxious about the first ride, consider collecting from the shop instead. You get a walkthrough on a quiet street, and you can ask questions with the bike in front of you. Shop hours are Monday–Saturday, 09:00–17:00 WITA.
Manual vs automatic in this fleet
This is where we have to be direct, because it changes whether you should book with us at all.
Treasure’s fleet is geared motorcycles. Clutch, gearbox, your left hand and left foot doing work. The Yamaha XSR155 and Honda CB150X are the friendly end of that: light, upright, forgiving in traffic. The Yamaha MT25 and Honda CBR250RR are 250-class bikes for people who already ride. Our custom builds are geared too.
We are not a scooter mill. If your plan is a twist-and-go automatic for café hops, the honest answer is that the island is full of shops that specialise in exactly that, and you should use one. Ask us on WhatsApp before booking if you are unsure — we would rather point you elsewhere than hand you a machine you cannot ride.
If you can ride a manual but have not for a while, a few things about geared bikes in Canggu specifically:
- First and second gear is most of your life here. Traffic rarely lets you above 40 km/h. Expect a busy clutch hand.
- Engine braking is your friend. On wet, sandy roads it is smoother than grabbing brakes.
- Slipping the clutch in a crawl is a skill you will use constantly at the Batu Bolong junctions. Practise it on Padonan first.
- Heat. A 250 in stationary traffic gets hot, and so do you. That is a real argument for a 155 as a daily.
Which bike suits which rider is a longer conversation — engine size, riding position, whether you will carry a passenger. That decision has its own page: which motorcycle to rent in Canggu. For the paperwork, deposit and delivery side, start from how to rent a motorcycle in Canggu.
Before your first ride
The night before pickup:
- License and IDP packed as originals. Details on the motorcycle license and IDP guide — a car-only license is not a motorcycle license, and a phone photo is not a document.
- Helmet on, every trip. Rider and passenger.
- Route planned on quiet inland roads, mid-morning, not the strip at sunset.
- Cover sorted if you want it, since we do not sell it.
- Our WhatsApp saved before you need it.
- An honest answer to whether you can ride a geared motorcycle in left-side traffic.
Bali is genuinely good riding — empty morning roads, a coastline worth the trip, and a bike that costs less per week than two airport transfers. It rewards riders who arrive with the skill already in their hands and spend the first day building the local habits: stay left, slow for sand, wait out the rain, and treat every gate as a hazard.
When you are ready, pick your dates on the catalog and we will have the bike waiting on Padonan.
Common questions
Is Bali a good place to learn to ride a motorcycle?
No. Canggu traffic teaches you nothing except fear. Learn the clutch, the brakes and the mirrors on quiet roads at home, then use Bali for riding — not for your first hour ever on two wheels.
How long does it take to get used to riding on the left in Bali?
Most riders stop actively thinking about it after two or three days. Right turns and roundabouts are where old habits come back, so give those your full attention for the first week.
Do you rent automatic scooters?
Our fleet is geared motorcycles — XSR155, MT25, CB150X, CBR250RR and customs. If you specifically want a twist-and-go automatic, ask on WhatsApp before booking and we will tell you honestly whether we can help.
What is the most dangerous thing about riding in Canggu?
Sand and wet paint on the beach roads, and vehicles pulling out of villa gates without looking. Both are handled by slowing down, not by better reflexes.
Will you teach me to ride at pickup?
We are not a riding school. We do walk you through the controls, the papers and the bike at handover, and we will refuse a rental if it is clear the bike is beyond your skill.
What should I do if it starts raining hard?
Pull in somewhere covered and wait. Bali storms are heavy and short. Painted lines, speed bumps and metal covers get very slippery in the first minutes of rain.

Super nice staff and a great place to rent a bike while you’re in Bali. I can definitely recommend these guys and their shop. Yan always helps me and takes care of everything whenever I need a bike. I’ve already been renting from them for five months and I’m completely satisfied. The bikes are always in perfect condition, and you can also stop by, have a coffee, and enjoy some good moments with the staff and all the bikes around. It feels like more than just a rental place. Highly recommended!

I rented a Honda CBR250RR from these guys and had a great experience. The bike was in excellent condition, clean, well-maintained, and a pleasure to ride. The whole rental process was smooth and easy, and the team was friendly, responsive, and helpful throughout. I rode the bike for a week and was so impressed that it actually convinced me to buy my own CBR250RR afterward. 😄
