Deciding which motorcycle to rent in Canggu is a question about your week, not about horsepower. A bike that is perfect for Berawa villa lanes and a cowork commute is the wrong machine for four hours of Uluwatu bypass, and the fastest bike in the fleet is the worst choice if you last used a clutch a decade ago.

Answer three questions before you look at photos

Almost every booking chat comes down to the same three:

1. How much clutch time do you actually have? Not "I rode a scooter in Thailand" — hours on a geared motorcycle in traffic. If the honest answer is close to none, read first ride in Bali traffic before you pick a model.
2. How far will you really ride? Honest average per day, not the day-trip fantasy.
3. Is someone riding behind you? A passenger changes the right answer more than engine size does.

Riders who answer those honestly end up on the right bike. Riders who pick by photo end up messaging us on day two.

Cafe, villa and daily Canggu: Yamaha XSR155

For Batu Bolong, Berawa beach roads, Pererenan rice-field lanes and the villa-to-cowork loop, a light neo-retro street bike is all the bike you need. The Yamaha XSR155 is the default recommendation for most guests: 155cc, upright enough to see over traffic, light enough that sand patches and a tight villa gate are not an event, and still a real motorcycle rather than a twist-and-go.

What that means in practice around Canggu:

• you can filter through the evening crawl toward Seminyak without cooking the clutch
• parking at a cafe with an attendant and a sloped shoulder is a non-issue
• an unexpected afternoon storm is manageable, because you are not fighting weight

The XSR155 hub holds both stock bikes and the Treasure Garage custom builds on the same platform, so you can choose a plain daily or a built look without changing how the bike rides. If you specifically want the built version, the custom XSR155 collection is the narrower list.

Long days upright: Honda CB150X

If your week involves fewer cafe hops and more full days — Tanah Lot, the hills above Tabanan, a run to Ubud and back — look at the Honda CB150X. Same lightweight 150cc class as the XSR, different brief: adventure-touring ergonomics, a small screen, and a taller stance that copes better with broken village asphalt and speed bumps that appear unpainted at dusk.

It is not a dirt bike, and we would rather say that plainly than sell you a rally fantasy. It is the comfortable daily for riders who want to sit up straight for six hours. The wider adventure hub also lists larger touring machines such as the Honda CB500X and Kawasaki Versys when they are bookable on your dates — worth checking if you are covering serious distance and already ride bigger bikes at home.

XSR155 or MT25 in Bali?

This is the most common fork in the road for guests searching for the best motorcycle rental Canggu has for a two-week trip. Both are naked street bikes from Yamaha, and they are not the same job.

The Yamaha MT25 is our 250cc naked: wide bars, upright position, noticeably more power than a 155 when you need to overtake on the bypass or hold a pace on the way back from Uluwatu at dusk. It is still a street bike, not a track toy. It also carries more weight at walking speed and rewards a rider who is already comfortable with a clutch in dense traffic.

Choose by honest self-assessment:

• XSR155 if Canggu is most of your riding, if you are re-learning a clutch, or if you want the easiest bike to live with day to day
• MT25 if you ride geared bikes at home, want overtaking authority, and will regularly leave the Canggu zone

If you cannot decide, take the 155. Nobody has ever regretted a bike that was easy to ride in Bali traffic. The naked hub groups this style if you want to compare what else is in the fleet.

Uluwatu days and faster roads: Honda CBR250RR

For riders who already enjoy sport geometry, the Honda CBR250RR is a proper 249cc parallel twin: full fairing, clip-on bars, a committed riding position. On the long stretches toward Uluwatu or the winding roads inland, it is the most rewarding bike we rent.

It is also the least forgiving choice for a Canggu week that is mostly two-kilometre errands. Clip-ons in stop-start traffic get old fast, a fairing traps engine heat over your legs at walking pace, and a faired sport bike draws more attention at a razia stop than an anonymous 155. Fuel at a station — not from a bottle rack — leave early, and treat the cliff-top parking lots as parking lots.

Relaxed coastal riding: cruisers

There is a fourth answer that gets ignored because it does not fit the "which cc" argument. If your ideal Canggu day is a low seat, a slow coast road and no interest in overtaking anyone, the cruiser hub — Honda Rebel, CMX500, Royal Enfield Meteor 350 — is the honest match.

Two things to know before you book one. Steering feels heavier than a light naked bike at walking pace, which is exactly the speed you move at inside a busy villa lane, then settles once you are rolling. And seat height varies a lot between these models, so check the individual bike card rather than assuming the category.

Two-up and luggage

A passenger changes the answer more than a hundred cc does. Upright bikes — XSR155, CB150X, MT25 — carry a second rider with a usable pillion seat and grab position. A faired sport bike technically has a passenger seat; after twenty minutes in Canggu heat, nobody thanks you for it.

Both riders need helmets, every time, including the two-minute ride to dinner. If you are carrying a surfboard, shopping runs or a laptop bag daily, say so when you book — that is a rack and storage question, and it is easier to solve at handover than on Batu Bolong with a bag on your knees.

Custom builds

Custom stock is the part of the fleet that other Canggu shops cannot copy: XSR155 builds from the Treasure Garage side of the business plus one-off machines such as Hunter and Cyberpunk. Different bars, seats, tyres and finishing, maintained in the same workshop as everything else we rent.

Two honest caveats. Customs are individual units, not a model with five spare bikes behind it, so availability is tighter — a build you saw on Instagram may already be out for your week. And a bike chosen for character is still a bike you have to ride home in the rain. If a custom is the reason you are booking with us, message us early rather than hoping the calendar cooperates.

When a scooter is the wrong tool

Most "motorbike rental Canggu" results push automatic scooters, and for some trips they are right. Start with the honest exclusions — a geared motorcycle from our fleet is the wrong tool if

• you have never operated a clutch and will only ride between cafes on Batu Bolong
• you want the cheapest automatic on the island regardless of what it is
• your passenger is not comfortable on a geared bike
• your entire plan is a supermarket run and a beach club

The reverse case is the one nobody renting scooters will tell you. A scooter is the wrong tool when your week actually looks like this:

• Distance. Anything past Seminyak, Ubud or Uluwatu on a small automatic is a long, buzzy, tiring day. A 155 or 250 turns the same route into a ride.
• Road surface. Padonan-side lanes, unpainted speed bumps and wet patches punish small wheels and soft suspension.
• Two-up with luggage. Surfboard racks aside, a proper motorcycle carries a second person with less drama.
• Riding as the point. If you ride at home, a week on a twist-and-go is a week of missing it.

We will tell you when our fleet is the wrong answer. Losing a booking is cheaper than handing someone a machine they cannot ride out of the Tibubeneng gate, and we do refuse rentals when that is clearly the case.

What actually decides the booking

Engine choice is the fun part. These are the things that change the outcome:

License class. Indonesian traffic law expects a valid motorcycle license, and visitors usually carry an IDP plus their home motorcycle license. The Indonesian SIM C covers up to and including 250cc — the 155s and the 249cc bikes on this page — while SIM CI runs to 500cc and SIM CII starts above it, which is where the larger adventure, cruiser and partner machines land. Rain. Wet season afternoons are not a reason to downsize, but they are a reason to prefer upright ergonomics and a bike you can put a foot down on comfortably.

Length of stay. A month on the wrong bike is expensive in a way a weekend is not. Long stays should start at monthly motorbike rental, where the pricing tier and the reservation length change — the license and deposit rules do not.
